Is the dental equipment sterilized?

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Many patients are apprehensive about visiting a dentist, since they are not sure whether the dental equipment used is properly sterilized and do not want to get a new infection after visiting the dentist. If fact, if have a choice, most patients will try to get the first dental appointment of the day, to avoid this problem.

Most dental offices sterilize the instruments used for treating the patient. They use either a chemical or heat method of sterilization of the dental equipment and tools. The heat sterilization method is the most commonly used method for dental treatment. A high temperature is reached, so that all bacteria are killed. Some low cost dental instruments are disposable and new  instruments are used for every patient.

However, some dentists may say that they are sterilizing, but just wipe off the equipment and use it on the next patient. In such cases, it is important to closely observer the office and staff to understand how sanitary it is.
Some of the indicators of the sanitation level are:
1. The staff should wash their hands before they see the patient
2. Are plastic barriers used
3. Whether the package of dental instruments is opened in front of the patient.

Root canal results in death

Child dies after root canal treatment

A single root canal is painful enough, I wonder how the dentist could carry out five, and that too on a such small child.  Many sittings are required to complete a root canal, the dentist should have been patient.

A few days later,  I had gone to a dentist for a routine dental check, there was no immediate dental problem. Some of my fillings were very old and got discolored over a period of time.  I asked her whether it was possible to change them. She  said that a root canal would most likely be required,  she would need to take an xray to confirm this.  After she took a xray, she confirmed that the root canal was needed. When I asked her the death of the girl, she said that it was because anesthesia had not been administered properly.

Some times the dentists are very careless, and there is no regulatory body to prevent such problems. They are least bothered about the patient’s welfare, only treating the maximum number of patients in the shortest time and earning the most money. Most dentists know that it will be difficult for the patients to prove the negligence in court and win damages.
