Electronic muscle simulation
Saturday, November 22nd, 2008Electronic muscle simulation (EMS) is a technique used for toning and reshaping muscles in different parts of the body like the buttocks and thighs. It works by sending an electrical signal to the muscle, making it contract, which simulates the impulses sent by the brain to the muscle during normal exercise. By using EMS units the body gets used to the short and intense muscular contractions.
Since the use of steroids for building muscles has been outlawed for most sports, athletes from Eastern Europe have used EMS to build their muscles for sports where sudden bursts of energy, high speed and quick reaction time are needed. These sports include boxing, sprinters, weight lifters and martial . Now this muscle building technique is available in Western countries also, and is used by sports persons as well as ordinary people to attain their fitness goals.
Though EMS units are not a substitute for a regular workout, they allow you to exercise your muscles in the comfort of your home, when you are busy with other sedentary activities like writing, reading, watching TV, speaking on the phone or surfing the internet. They allow you to supplement your regular workout without putting stress on your joints, back and shoulders. The electronic muscle simulation systems are recommended by physiotherapists for disabled people, to prevent atrophy of their muscles. They are also used for treatment of muscular, tendon or ligament injuries.
